History of Rolex Watches

As one of the most recognized brands worldwide, Rolex has a rich, deep history. In 1905, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London that specialized in the distribution of timepieces. At the time, wristwatches were not very accurate and were rarely seen.  Wilsdorf wanted to make the wristwatch more commonplace and far more reliable. In 1908 he came up with a brand name that would forever change the watch world “Rolex”.

In his quest for accuracy in the wristwatch, Wilsdorf first concentrated on the quality of the movement. Within just two years Rolex was the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision. In 1914 Rolex movements made yet another mark on history.  The Rolex wristwatch received a class “A” precision certificate from the Kew Observatory in Great Britain. At the time this sort of distinction had been held exclusively for marine chronometers only, and from that time forward “Rolex” became synonymous with precision.  In 1919 Wilsdorf moved the company to the watchmaking capital of the world, Geneva Switzerland. Soon after “Montres Rolex S.A.” was registered and the world of wristwatches would soon change forever.

Rolex wristwatches set and took part in many milestones from the 1920’s on. The name “Oyster” was derived from their creation of the first waterproof wristwatch in 1926.  English swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex Oyster as she swam across the English Channel in 1927. What could be seen as the company’s “grand moment” came in 1931 with their invention and patent of the worlds first self-winding movement, the Oyster Perpetual. The perpetual rotor at the core of this mechanism is the heartbeat for every automatic modern luxury watch made to this day.

The more modern versions of Rolex watches began in 1945, with their release of the first Datejust. It was the first self-winding wristwatch to also display the date in a window on the dial. From their Rolex truly began to find its place in the watch world. The early 1950’s marked their creation of the first Submariner diving watch and soon after, the creation of the GMT-Master. In many ways, these watches are very similar to the ones that are still produced to this day.
