The History of Hublot Watches
The Swiss luxury watchmaker saw its beginnings in 1980 and marked the birth of a “fusion” concept a few months after its founding. Carlo Crocco, the company’s founder had worked for the Italian Binda Group and decided to go off on his own in 1976. He moved to Switzerland with the goal of starting a new watch company and set out designing a watch he called Hublot, after the French word “porthole”. His initial watch was one that unveiled the watch worlds first all natural rubber strap. The watch was not seen as a success at the Basel Watch Fair in 1980, but soon after proved to be a big commercial success.
Carlo Crocco remained extremely busy with his watch design ambitions and set out to find someone to head his watchmaking business. Crocco met Jean-Claude Biver, the then president of Swatch Group’s Omega division. In 2004, Biver became the CEO of Hublot Watches. Upon his arrival, Biver immediately set out to create a new flagship line for the company. At Basel 2005 the Big Bang collection was unveiled. The new line was an instant success and the company’s sales tripled overnight. The Big Band Chronograph won multiple international awards including the “2005 Design Prize”, “Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix” and the middle eastern award for “Watch of the Year”. Biver took Hublots sales from 24 million Swiss Francs in 2004 to nearly 100 million Swiss Francs by the end of 2006.
In 2008, Carlo Crocco sold the brand for an undisclosed amount to LVMH, who owns numerous other brands such as Tag Heuer. Keeping in fashion with their cutting-edge design, in 2009, Hublot launched its WISeKey counterfeiting detection system. The system utilizes a smart card and authenticates watches through Hublot’s servers. This was the first of its kind in the watch industry and has been a big hit among buyers and sellers.
Hublot’s cutting-edge design and technological advancements in anti-counterfeiting have allowed the brand to thrive in recent years. The addition of its Big Bang line proved to be a great success and remains the company’s most popular line today. With over 80 boutiques worldwide the company has grown to be a true icon in the world of watches.
